Popular Swedish furniture and décor company, IKEA, is recalling one of their popular children’s toys due to concerns it is a choking hazard. On March 21, 2023, IKEA announced the recall of their Blavingad Fishing Games, urging parents to dispose of the toys immediately.
Defective or dangerous children’s product are a serious threat to consumers. Sadly, hundreds of thousands of children suffer injuries each year due to products that should have been safe, but weren’t. At Kherkher Garcia, LLP, our personal injury lawyers want families to be aware of potential dangers, such as choking hazards, and how to get help when an injury occurs.
Below, we offer information about the Blavingad Fishing Game recall, why toys may be recalled, and what parents can do if an injury occurs.
The Blavingad Fishing Game is part of the Blavingad collection of children’s products. This particular product is a game that is meant to spark curiosity and learning. The toy features wooden fish-shaped pieces with metal rivets that children can pick up with a wooden pole that has a magnet attached.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the small rivets may detach from the pieces, posing a choking hazard. The CPSC has received at least four complaints related to the product, but it is unknown if there are any injuries related to this toy.
The CPSC is urging parents to collect all pieces of the Blavingad Fishing Game and dispose of them to eliminate the choking hazard. IKEA is offering a full refund for the products. Parents can identify if their product is subject to the recall by the following:
There are 11 pieces in the kit, plus the die. The toys were sold in stores and online between October 2022 and March 2023. There are around 25,000 units in the recall in the United States, and additional units in Canada.
Recalls like this one highlight a much larger problem with dangerous or defective children’s products. The CPSC receives complaints and announces recalls related to children’s products on a regular basis.
Children’s products are subject to recalls for various reasons, but most often they are due to safety. Some of the most common reasons for recalls include:
In the case of the Blavingad Fishing Game, it appears that safety and quality are both at the heart of the issues with the product.
If you suspect that one of your child’s toys are defective or dangerous, it is important to stop use and contact the manufacturer as soon as possible.
As parents, we want what is best for our children. We purchase products with the trust that they are safe and effective as intended. While we cannot control how products are manufactured or perform, there are things parents can do to be aware and be prepared to respond to a potential hazard.
Here are some general guidelines that may help parents identify choking hazards:
It is always important to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions to prevent choking hazards. Sadly, child injuries occur to even the most conscientious and aware families. It is important that parents reach out for the help they need when an injury occurs.
None of us want to consider what will happen if our children are injured or become ill. However, this is a reality for thousands of families each year. If your child is injured by a defective toy, there are several steps you can take to protect your child and their legal rights:
It is important to prioritize your child’s health and safety in the event of an injury from a defective toy. Taking these steps can help ensure that your child receives the medical attention they need and that the incident is properly documented for any legal action that may be necessary.
