Former officer charged with deadly crash in northeast Houston

Posted on Wednesday, July 21st, 2021 at 7:13 pm

HOUSTON, TX – A former police officer has been charged with a deadly crash that occurred in northeast Houston in November, reports ABC 13.

The victim, Walter Cooper, was stopped at a stop sign located at the intersection of Darien St and Ley Rd when he saw a police car driven by Matthew Valdez about at a distance of about a football field away.

Cooper saw one vehicle pass by and began to turn onto the road when Valdez’s vehicle, which was not using its sirens or emergency lights, slammed into his.

Since Cooper’s blood-alcohol level was at three times the legal limit at the time of the crash, Valdez’s lawyer believes he is the one at fault.

However, the prosecution disagrees. They say that since Cooper remained at the stop sign for at least two seconds, he acted the same way a sober driver would have.
