News: 2 dead after driverless Tesla strikes tree in The Woodlands

Posted on Wednesday, September 8th, 2021 at 3:07 pm

SPRING, TX – Two men died when a Tesla believed to be on autopilot crashed into a tree at in the Woodlands area on the evening of April 17, The New York Times reports.

The 2019 Model S Tesla was speeding on Hammock Dunes Place shortly before 9:30 p.m. that night, when it failed to negotiate a curve, went off the road, and slammed into a tree. The vehicle then caught on fire.

Two men were in the front passenger seat and the rear seat at the time of the collision. It is unclear if they died from the crash or the fire ignited after the vehicle plowed into the tree. They were identified at the time as a 59-year-old man and a 69-year-old man.

No one was behind the wheel, and it seems that the vehicle’s self-driving function may have been enabled at the time of the collision.

It took firefighters four hours and 30,000 gallons of water to extinguish the fire. Some regulators believe that the batteries used in electric cars may pose a safety risk to emergency crews.

The incident is under investigation by Federal Safety officials and Texas police.
