HOCKLEY, TX – An evacuation order was issued Saturday to Hockley residents within a half-mile radius of a recycling plant following a fire at the facility, Houston Chronicle reports.
The facility, VLS Recovery Services, is located at 17020 Premium Dr. The fire began when steel drums inside the plant fell over and somehow ignited recycled plastics and used motor oil. A small fire also broke out in a park adjacent to the facility.
Fire crews from multiple agencies were dispatched to the scene around 10:30 a.m. and soon had the fire under control. They remained on the scene until the afternoon to respond to multiple “hot spots” at the facility.
Authorities lifted the evacuation order around 3 p.m. It is not clear if anyone was injured in the blaze.
