HOUSTON, TX – The Astroworld Festival at NRG Park turned deadly when thousands of fans rushed towards the stage during rapper Travis Scott’s performance Friday night, the Houston Chronicle reports.

Though the exact number of casualties is unclear at this time, at least eight people died. Police say 17 concertgoers were hospitalized, 11 in cardiac arrest. Most of the victims were in their 20’s.

50,000 fans attended the event, quickly overwhelming hundreds of guards and police officers on duty. Many fans surged past the metal detectors and security checkpoints when the gates opened at around 2 p.m.

Hundreds were treated for heat exhaustion, drug overdoses, and alcohol poisoning at the field hospital throughout the day.

Scott took the stage at around 9 p.m. He performed several songs before the crowd suddenly began pushing and shoving their way to the front, crushing countless people. By 9:38 p.m., the crowds were so tight that many found it difficult to breathe. Many who fell were subsequently trampled in the crush.

Paramedics drove golf carts to make their way to the injured attendees. Unfortunately, the dense crowds made it difficult to reach the victims. Cell phone footage taken from the event shows some spectators climbing onto and dancing on top of the emergency vehicles.

The Houston Police Department has set up a reunification center at the Wyndham Houston Hotel and is in the process of identifying victims of the tragedy at hospitals. People can also call 832-393-2991 or 832-393-2990 to search for loved ones who may have been injured or killed during the festival.
