2 killed in La Porte chemical leak identified

Posted on Friday, July 30th, 2021 at 7:38 pm

LA PORTE, TX – Authorities have released the names of the 2 employees killed in a chemical leak at LyondellBasell Tuesday, reports the Associated Press.

Dustin Day, 36, and Shawn Kuhleman, 32, were killed in the industrial accident which released 100,000 pounds of a mixture containing high levels of acetic acid into the atmosphere. Acetic acid is toxic when inhaled and can burn skin.

In addition to the deaths of the 2 men, 30 other workers were hospitalized. As of Thursday, 2 people still remained in the hospital.

Though the exact cause of the leak is not yet known, preliminary investigations indicate it may have been caused by a cap that had burst on a pressurized line of acetic acid.

Multiple agencies, including OSHA, the EPA, the Chemical Safety Board, and HCSO, are investigating the incident.

2 dead, 30 hospitalized after leak at LyondellBasell plant in La Porte

Posted on Wednesday, July 28th, 2021 at 1:32 pm

LA PORTE, TX – Two people were killed and dozens more were hospitalized following a chemical leak at a LyondellBasell Industries facility in southeastern Harris County yesterday evening.

Click2Houston reports that emergency crews were called to the chemical plant, located 1515 Miller Cut-Off Road, shortly after 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 27.

Two people died at the scene, seven were injured, and 30 were hospitalized over unspecified concerns, in what EMS described as a “mass casualty event.”

Authorities say that the leak happened in the facility’s acetyls unit, which was at least partly shut down for maintenance at the time. About 100,000 pounds of glacial acetic acid was released during the leak, which was quickly stopped and is believed to have been contained on the site.

Glacial acetic acid is used in a wide range of industrial applications, with downstream products ranging from film and tapes to inks and cosmetics.

Investigations are ongoing, and further blog posts about the matter are likely forthcoming.
